Gurdas Maan is one of the best Punjabi singers. He is counted among the legends of Punjabi music. He is not only an excellent singer but also an excellent actor and songwriter. Most of this work is associated with the Punjabi language only. He became famous across the country with his song "Dil Da Mamla Hai," which was released in the year 1980. Since then till today, he never looked back and has worked on more than 300 songs and 34 albums. He collaborated with Diljit Dosanjh on the song "Ki Banu Dunia Da" in 2015 at MTV Coke Studio India. The song was aired on MTV India's Season 4 Episode 5 on August 16, 2015. He is the only Punjabi singer to win the Nation Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

Early Life

Gurdas Mann was born in Giddarbaha, Punjab, on January 4, 1957. His father's name was Gurdev Singh, and his mother's name was Tej Kaur. Gurdas Maan's early education was completed in his native town only, i.e., Giddarbaha. After completing his initial schooling in his hometown, he take admission to one of the colleges of Malout to complete his graduation. He completed his graduation from DAV College of Malout.

After completing his education in Malout, his parents enrolled him in Patiala for further education. He was very interested in sports in his childhood, and due to this, he took admission to the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports; this institute is also known as the National Institute of Sports. From here, he obtained a master's degree in Physical Education. During his college times, he participated in many youth festivals run by different institutions and, with the support of his friends, won multiple awards for his acting and singing. He also participated in numerous sporting competitions and earned awards, such as a bronze at the National Championship and a black belt in judo.

Starting Career

Gurdas Maan was very fond of singing songs since his school time. Apart from singing, he was also very interested in mimicry. After completing his education, he met some electricity board officials at one of the singing events. He was offered to work on the electricity board. He accepted the offer and worked on the electricity board for some time.

Along with working in the electricity department, he also used to do small singing shows. During one such show, he met the producer of Jalandhar TV station, who got inspired by him after listening to his song Dil Da Mamla Hai, and the producer immediately proposed to him to record this song; without thinking much, Maan agreed for the same. Gurdas Maan rose to prominence in the country when the song was broadcast on December 31, 1980, and it attracted widespread notice, and from here, Gurdas Maan's career as a singer started.

A Popular Punjabi Singer

As soon as Gurdas Maan's song Dil Da Mamla Hai was released, his popularity as a singer increased significantly. HMV became interested in the song after hearing about its tremendous success and decided to record and release it. Gurdas's debut album was eventually released by HMV in 1981, one year later.

Gurudas Mann is married to Manjeet Maan, a Punjabi film producer and director. She also owns a film production company named Sai Productions, which is based in Mumbai. They have a son named Gurickk Maan. He married Simran Kaur Mundi in the year 2020, who is a film actress.

  • He won the Best Male Playback Singer award at the 54th National Film Awards for the song Heer. The only singer from Punjab to receive a national award.
  • Maan became well-known after penning the famous song "Dil Da Mamla Ha." Soon after, Maan recorded "Mamla Gadbad Hai" and "Chhalla," which was a big hit.
  • Alongside artist Diljit Dosanjh, he sang the hit song Ki Banu Duniya Da on Coke Studio MTV Season 4. After being released on August 15, 2015, the song received over 32 million views on YouTube in just one week.
