IISC: Indian Institute of Science

IISc stands for Indian Institute of Science. It is a well-reputed public research university for science and research students; it is a well-known prestigious university located in Bangalore, India. It's a place where people study and research subjects like science, engineering, design, and management. This university is famous and important in India.

It was started in 1909 with the help of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata and hence is sometimes called the "Tata Institute". It's one of the best universities in India and is known worldwide for its research. In 1958, it got a special status as a university, and in 2018, it was recognized as an outstanding institute.

History

Jamsetji Tata and Swami Vivekananda were two important people in India. They met on a ship in 1893 and discussed bringing the steel industry to India. Five years later, Tata wrote to Vivekananda and asked for help with his plan to create a research institute for science in India. Vivekananda liked the idea and supported it.

After that, Tata met with a group of people and discussed the institute's plan. They presented their plan to a leader named Viceroy George Curzon in 1898. Another smart person, Sir William Ramsay, who had won a Nobel Prize, suggested that Bangalore would be a good place for the institute because the environment there was more connected to studies and Technology at that time.

Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and Tata gave land and buildings for the institute. The Maharaja also gave money. Another man named Nizam Osman Ali Khan also supported this view by donating money.

The institute's plan was approved and started on May 27, 1909. The first batch of students came in 1911. Morris Travers, who had worked with Sir William Ramsay, became the first director. Later, Sir C.V. Raman, a Nobel Laureate, became the director.

In the starting days, the institute only offered master's programs in the engineering field, but after that, it also started providing programs for science students.

Later on, the institute created a special recognition in science and research. In 2018, the institute received an award for the best institute in the field of science, and in 2019, it came up with a brand statement. In 2022, the institute received many donations to create a medical institute for post-graduate studies.

How did it start?

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was started in the early 90s. It was established in 1909 with the vision of Famous Industrialist J.N Tata. The main motive was to build this institute for growth in the field of research and education, and at that time, more than 2000 active researchers worked in the area of science and Technology in this college.

It is one of the most prestigious and oldest science colleges in India and has earned its reputation internationally due to the best academic and research faculty available in this college.

IISc is also known for its academic freedom, as it always opens a door for research and focuses on research growth. Furthermore, it provides high-quality faculty to its students so that every student can learn well.

IISc operates like top research schools around the world. Professors are appointed and promoted based on evaluation by experts in their field from other countries. Additionally, students advance by passing difficult exams or undergoing in-depth interviews about their knowledge.

Bangalore Campus

The 400-acre IISc campus is located in the heart of Bangalore City and is quite large. The stunning IISc campus is situated in Bangalore's north region. The routes leading to the more than 40 departments on campus go by names like Gulmohar Marga, Mahogany Marga, and others. It is roughly 6 kilometers from the Kempegowda Bus Station and the Bangalore City Railway Station.

The Kempegowda International Airport is only a quick 35 km drive from the institute. The Raman Scientific Institute, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Wood Research Institute, Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), and some other scientific institutions, are located close by IISc. A special bus service makes it easy for people from these institutions to travel to IISc.

The college provides everything that employees and students may possibly need, making it feel like a tiny community. There are six places to eat and drink, including a gym and sports complex, football and cricket fields, dining halls, a restaurant, student residences, a library, stores, and staff housing. There are several facilities, making it an excellent location.

Additionally, a fantastic natural habitat surrounds the IISc site. It is made up of several kinds of plants so that the air on campus is clean. A few of the plants are uncommon; some of them have been brought here from different countries.

There are large plants here that exist in more than 110 different varieties. The names of the roads on campus are derived from the distinctive trees that inhabit the area.

On the site, there is a primary building that is mostly used for key activities, such as certain important talks and faculty meetings. With a grey tower in front of the structure, its design recalls images of ancient architecture. Between 1912 and 1913, a Bombay-based company built the tower, which is now well-known in Bangalore. In addition, a special memorial is in front of it, which is dedicated to J. N. Tata. Tata's kindness and continuous work on behalf of India are often recalled by those remarks.

More buildings on the site were built in 1940 by a German architect, Otto Königsberger, including those for metallurgy and aerospace studies.

Challakere Campus

IISc has a second campus in Challakere that is about 1,500 acres in area and is extraordinarily big. Some notable buildings created within this campus include a Climate Observatory, a Solar Power Research Center, a Skill Development Center, and a Talent Development Center. Additionally, they are developing sustainable technology and working on bioenergy as well.

This new campus was constructed with the help of two important government employees who were well-versed in IISc, Janardhana Swamy and Amalan Biswas. They found the location, bought the building, got government approval, and even got enough money to start the branch of the institute there. They divided everything into six parts and arranged who would be in charge and how things would be done.

Engineering and science are the two main divisions of the institute's resources. This helps them intellectually. The chairperson of that department or center leads each segment.

Academic Programmes

PG Research Programs

The campus is known for its better research academics, and most students usually pursue research at the campus. The campus is working towards offering PhD degrees in 40 different subjects. They take on roughly 575 new research students yearly, usually from different institutions or businesses.

Simply put, a unique program for BSc grads enables them to conduct research and obtain a PhD in math, physics, chemistry, biology, and more.

PG Course Programme

The institute offers a two-year program called MTech in many engineering departments. While there are all the necessary courses in this program, students also have the option to take other courses from various departments and work on projects they are interested in.

IISc typically offers two different master's degrees: one where you take classes (like an MTech, Mgt, or M.Des.) and one where you conduct additional research (like an MTech research).

There are also some unique programs. The institute also offers online programs like the Master of Technology program for engineers and scientists who want to learn more, especially in Data Science and Business Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Electronics. The online data science course is one of the best compared to other institutes offering data science specialization.

Recently, it started MSc programs in life sciences and chemical sciences. These are two-year programs that include classes and hands-on training in labs. Students can choose their coursework and work on a research project.

UG Courses

IISc came up with a proposal in 2009 to provide kids with a scientific curriculum after graduating high school (Class XII). In 2011, the first batch of students enrolled. You can complete this program's four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) or five-year Integrated Master of Science degrees. Six options of subjects are available: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials Science, Mathematics and Physics. The primary purpose is to show students how the many branches of science interact.

A new curriculum named BTech in Mathematics and Computing is now also available. It is intended for students who desire to work in fields that heavily rely on math, computer science, and data science to succeed.

If you want to enroll in the IISc program, you have to take one of the five entrance tests like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, IISER Aptitude Test, or KVPY (although KVPY is no longer available).
