Major Mohit Sharma

Major Mohit Sharma was an Indian Army officer who was awarded the most honorable award in India, Ashoka Chakra. Major Mohit Sharma was born on 13th January 1978 in Rohtak, Haryana, and died on 21st March 2009 at the age of 31. Major Mohit Sharma served the Indian army from 1999 to 2009. Mohit Sharma was the younger son of Rajendra Prasad Sharma and Susheela.

Mohit Sharma was very fond of music and playing different musical instruments was his hobby. Mohit Sharma completed his schooling in Delhi; he completed 12th standard from DPS or Delhi Public School. Mohit Sharma was excellent in his studies and he was a very focused and attentive student. After passing the 12th, Mohit Sharma decided to join the Indian Army and he achieved his goal by doing proper planning.

Mohit's father wanted him to become an engineer, so he admitted Mohit to an engineering college. He was admitted to Shri Saint Gajanand Maharaj Engineering College, which was located in Maharashtra. With the study of engineering, Mohit Sharma was also preparing for NDA and he qualified for the examination in the first attempt. After clearing the exam, he returned to Ghaziabad, Delhi, to meet his parents.

Mohit Sharma was very close to his family members. On holidays, he used to come home and spend most of his time with his family members. After Mohit Sharma's death, his family shared a lot of information about him. At the time of the award ceremony, Mohit Sharma's wife, Major Rishima Sharma, received the Ashoka Chakra award on behalf of Major Mohit Sharma. In an interview, she described that Mohit Sharma was very close to her and everybody used to love him a lot. He was very dedicated to his duty to the nation.

Military Career

In 1995, Mohit Sharma passed the National Defence Academy and he was one of the best candidates of his batch; he was an all-rounder at everything. Mohit Sharma always followed his passion and he was outstanding in horse riding and many other sports activities as well. After completing the session of NDA, Mohit Sharma joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and there, he achieved success at every stage. Soon, Mohit Sharma was awarded with an appointment of the rank of BCA (battalion cadet adjutant) and he was one of the members of the army who met President K.R Narayanan.

After passing IMA in 1999, Mohit Sharma was commissioned in the 5 Madras Regiment and he got his first posting in Hyderabad. Then, Mohit Sharma was posted to Kashmir under 38 Rashtriya Rifle where he served the nation with full dedication and bravery. At that time, the decorum of Kashmir was a bit sensitive.

Notably, around June 1999, an operation named 'Operation Rakshak' was going on against the terrorists. Mohit Sharma also became part of this operation and the operation was quite successful. He also took part in many other successful missions. At the age of 24, Mohit Sharma was awarded his first medal for his bravery. Mohit Sharma always wanted to become a Para commando, hence he completed 3 years of military service under the Madras Regiment and he opted to join Para SF. In June 2003, he completed his training for Para commando and got the promotion as a caption and so he was posted in Kashmir.

In March 2004, Mohit Sharma was part of a mission with his team to kill two terrorists who were planning something very dangerous for India. After this successful mission, Mohit Sharma was promoted to major and he was awarded with Sena medal on 11th December 2005. He was again posted in Kashmir; meanwhile, Major Mohit Sharma got the responsibility to train commandos for some important missions. Later, in 2009, Mohit Sharma again moved to Kashmir to attend martyrdom.

Death

In the year 2009, the unit of Major Mohit Sharma was working in the Kupwara district of Kashmir; they all were working on their plans against terrorists. In March 2009, the commanding officer got information regarding the conspiracies of terrorists. After the information, the entire unit including Major Mohit Sharma immediately launched the operation and Mohit Sharma was the leader of the team.

On 21st March 2009, Mohit Sharma with his teammates started the operation and they all entered in forest, where terrorists were present. On the same day, 21st March 2009, Mohit Sharma and four soldiers of the Indian Army died because of a gunshot. It was the most deadly attack in the history of the Indian army. On 23rd March 2009, the last rituals for Major Mohit Sharma were held in Ghaziabad.

Awards

Major Mohit Sharma was awarded with Ashoka Chakra on 26th January 2010, which is the highest peace-time military decoration. Before Ashoka Chakra, Major Mohit Sharma was awarded with COAS commendation card for the success of Operation Rakshak, and in 2005, he was awarded with Sena Medal for another successful operation.

In the year 2019, Delhi Metro Corporation changed the name of Rajendra Nagar Metro Station to 'Major Mohit Sharma (Rajendra Nagar) Metro Station'. Major Mohit Sharma was an unforgettable personality in India. His family members also shared a lot of information regarding his sacrifices. Madhur Sharma, Mohit Sharma's elder brother was once invited to the reality show named 'Indian Idol', where he talked about Major Mohit Sharma and the contestants sang many songs as a tribute to Major Mohit Sharma. Thus, 21st March 2009 is another unforgettable date in Indian history when we lost the gem of our India, Major Mohit Sharma.
