Early Life

On November 22, 1939, Mulayam Singh Yadav was born at Saifai Village, Etawah District, Uttar Pradesh. Sughar Singh Yadav and Murti Devi, his parents. He graduated with three degrees in political science: an M.A. from B.R. College, Agra University, a B.T. from A.K. College in Shikohabad, and a B.A. from Karm Khestra Post Graduate College in Etawah.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had two wives. His first wife, Malti Devi, was very sick and couldn't move or talk for a long time. She passed away in 2003 after having a baby boy named Akhilesh Yadav. Mulayam Singh Yadav was the leader of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017.

Famous people like Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain served as mentors to Mulayam Singh Yadav. He won the 1967 election and served eight terms in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Mulayam Singh Yadav was one of the politicians who was imprisoned and detained for nineteen months due to protests during Indira Gandhi's declaration of Emergency in 1975.

Yadav became a member of the state cabinet in 1977 and later became the President of the Lok Dal in Uttar Pradesh in 1980. The Lok Dal then merged with the Janata Dal. Mulayam Singh Yadav was appointed as the leader of the opposition in the UP Legislative Council in 1983 and held that position until 1985.

Founder of Samajwadi Party

In 1992, the Samajwadi Party was established by Mulayam Singh Yadav. It was one of the many parties that emerged from the division of the Janata Dal into several local parties. The Samajwadi Party, founded just a few months before the destruction of the Babri Mosque, is thought to have played a significant role in preventing violence in Uttar Pradesh after the incident.

  • First term
    In 1989, Mulayam Singh Yadav assumed the role of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time. Following the dissolution of VP Singh's National Government in 1990, he aligned with the Janata Dal (Socialist) Party and remained in power with the backing of the Indian National Congress.
  • Second Term
    In 1992, Mulayam Singh Yadav established the Samajwadi Party. In 1993, he formed an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party for the upcoming elections in UP in November 1993. This alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party prevented the BJP from returning to power in the state. With the support of the Congress and Janata Dal, Mulayam Singh Yadav became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Third Term
    In 2002, following a turbulent post-election situation in Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party and Bharatiya Janata Party came together to establish a government led by Dalit Leader Mayawati, who was also a major rival of Mulayam Singh Yadav in the state. The Bharatiya Janta Party withdrew from the government in 2003, paving the way for Mulayam Singh Yadav to become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.He was inaugurated as the UP CM for the third time in 2003.

In 1996, Mulayam Singh Yadav won a seat from the Mainpuri Constituency in the 11th Lok Sabha. His party became a member of the United Front Coalition Government that same year and Yadav was appointed India's Minister of Defense.

Death

Yadav was hospitalized in September 2022 and placed on a ventilator as his health worsened. He had been in the hospital for a month. On October 10, 2022, at the age of 82, Yadav passed away in a hospital in Gurgaon. His funeral was conducted with full state honors in his hometown of Saifai.
