Roman Saini

Roman Saini is a physician, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, educator, and former IAS officer. He is a co-founder of "Unacademy," a project in education that offers online (paid and free) instructional materials for competitive tests. On July 27, 1991, in Raikaranpura Village, Kotputli Town, Jaipur, Rajasthan, Roman Saini was born. He was raised in a middle-class household with strong academic credentials, which aided in his academic success.

He took the AIIMS admission test after finishing his education, and at the age of 16, he passed it with the lowest score ever. Roman enrolled in AIIMS to get his MBBS.

Family and relations

Roman is an OBC member of a Hindu family and is from the Mali community. His mother is a housewife and his father is an engineer. Avesh Saini, Roman's brother, is a paediatrician, and Ayushee Saini is a medical student.

Career

At AIIMS, Roman began his medical career as a junior resident. Roman visited medical camps in a number of India's impoverished regions while working as a resident doctor, where he observed people fighting to obtain even the most basic necessities. He made the decision to join the public service at that point in order to have a bigger impact on society. One of his friends, Gaurav Munjal, came to him with the idea to launch an educational portal when he was in his second year of the MBBS programme. Together, Roman, Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, and Sachin Gupta founded "Unacademy," a learning platform that quickly gained popularity among students studying for competitive examinations, particularly UPSC candidates.

Roman passed the Civil Service Exam on his first try when he was 22 years old and received the AIR 18. One of the youngest candidates in India to pass the test was him. He joined as the Assistant Collector in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, after finishing his studies at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), located in Mussoorie. Saini left his position as Assistant Collector in 2016 so he could dedicate more attention to his "Unacademy" programme.

Roman and his team, which included government employees, educators, engineers, physicians, and specialists from several other sectors, began to develop their Unacademy's YouTube channel by uploading study materials pertaining to health care, information technology, the civil service, and foreign languages. The videos quickly started receiving millions of views following their release. More than 10 channel users reportedly passed the civil service exams by using the advice provided on the channel, in addition to this.

Learned values

One needs discipline and rules in their lives in order to achieve anything. We stand out from the crowd because of these values. Roman followed a few essential rules in his life, such as abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, maintaining a nutritious diet, getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night, and engaging in regular exercise. He was able to sharpen his mind and focus more intently on his objectives thanks to this routine. He picked up a lot of morals and ideals on the way:

  • Decisions in life must now be made by you; if not, someone else will!
  • Lamenting any irrationality will not elevate you; on the contrary, it will depress you.
  • Competence is always attainable, but confidence requires a great deal of practise.
  • A ship in a harbour is useless until it is abandoned; therefore, one must at least take a reasonable number of risks throughout one's life.
  • When you choose to give UPSC, disregard all that anyone has ever said to you.
  • While luck does play a role, you are fortunate to have access to a wealth of knowledge and information that is only a tap or click away from the screen. Therefore, maximise it.

Career is fluid

Roman Saini never set limits on his professional aspirations and objectives. Despite having a study report published in a highly reputable medical publication, he nonetheless had the guts to leave AIIMS and enrol full-time in UPSC. When he cleared the UPSC and earned the 18th place, he was widely covered by the media. Even though he was appointed Assistant Collector of Jabalpur, he resigned in 2016 to launch an online education programme for IAS candidates.

A different side of the coin

Although Roman Saini IAS is a name that most of us are familiar with, he is much more than what he portrays himself as. His charisma enabled him to inspire millions of people as a motivational speaker. In addition to exploring new places and solving riddles, he enjoys listening to and playing the guitar, which feeds his passion for music.

Current Situation

Roman Saini's career has been quite the adventure, starting as a medical student and ending with him completing UPSC. Through his platform, he currently offers free online courses and webinars to a variety of hopefuls. His committed crew uploads research and study materials to the internet from a variety of career categories.
