SCI: Shipping Corporation of India

SCI stands for Shipping Corporation of India. It was established on 2 October 1961 by the merger of Eastern Shipping Corporation and Western Shipping Corporation. It started as a marginal Liner shipping company with only 19 vessels and today, it is the largest shipping company in India. It is actively involved in the various segments of the shipping trade. The fleet owned by SCI includes product tankers, bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, container vessels, chemical carriers, offshore supply vessels, etc.

SCI owns and operates around 35% of the Indian tonnage, and involved in all areas of shipping business related to national and international trades. Today, it is the only shipping company in India that operates break-bulk services, liquid/dry bulk services, international container services, offshore services and passenger services, etc. In addition to this, it also manages a large number of vessels on behalf of various government organizations.

SCI has contributed a lot to the EXIM trade of country and the national exchequer by earning or saving valuable foreign exchange. It played the role of lifeline during emergency or distress by maintaining the continued supply of crude oil which drives the economy of a country. It is also the only shipping company in India which provides transport services for LNG, a vital fuel for the power plant and petrochemical industry of India.

It also received various awards from national and international organizations for excellence in operational efficiencies, customer satisfaction and handling emergencies, etc. On 1 August 2008, Govt. of India conferred the "Navratna" status to the SCI.
