Top 10 IIT in India

IITs are the institute where every engineering student dreams to study, the term IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology, and all the IIT institutions are recognized as "Institutions of National Importance" by the government of India. Several top Scientists and Engineers from all around the world are qualified from IIT institutions. The first IIT campus was established in Kharagpur in the year 1951 and was announced as an Institute of national importance for the first time in the year 1961. At present, there are 23 IITs in India where over 160000 graduate and undergraduate students are pursuing.

Taking admission to IITs is not an easy task every year thousands of students from all over the country prepare for its entrance exam known as JEE. This exam is organized in two stages one after another JEE Main and JEE Advance.

Ranking IITs is a difficult job but some organization ranks IITs every year based on their quality of education and contribution towards society. The latest list for the year 2022 is as follows;

1. IIT Madras

IIT Madras is one of the earliest started IITs in India, the campus of the institute is located in Tamil Nadu, India. Based on 19 different categories such as Pharmacy, Engineering, Management, dental, and many more these institution has been ranked as the Number one IIT in India.

The campus of the institute is spread over a vast area of 2.5 square kilometers which makes it one of the biggest institutes in India. Currently, there are over 600 faculty and 10000 students who are active members of this institute.

History

The technical assistance for building these institutions was first offered by the West German government in the year 1956, but later after a three-year delay in 1959 an agreement Known as Indo- German was signed in Bonn west Germany. The government of West Germany help out IIT madras in all three key aspects Technical, academic and financial, during this period IIT Madras was among the largest international project which was sponsored by the west German

It was the year 1959 when the first batch of 120 students took admitted to the Indian Institute of Technology, In the starting year IIT madras offered only Engineering courses. The inauguration of the institute was done by the union minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, the first convocation ceremony of the institute was special too as it was attended by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, then the President of India. Recently in 2009, IIT madras celebrated its Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee in 2019.

2. IIT Delhi

There is no doubt in naming IIT Delhi as the second-best IIT institute in India, it was established in the year 1961, and it is well known for providing excellence in training in the field of research and development in science, and technology in India. At present, the campus of this institute is spread over 320 acres of land. It was declared an institute of national importance in the year 1963.

All IITs have the same organizational structure wherein the President of India is at the top of the hierarchy as a visitor. IIT Council is under the President. Under the IIT Council is the board of governors of each IIT. The director is under the board of governors, who is the chief academic and executive officer of the IIT. Under the director comes the deputy director. Under the director and the deputy director, come the deans, heads of departments, and registrar.

3. IIT Bombay

Being ranked as the third-best IIT, IIT Bombay is considered the best engineering college in the country. It is located in Maharashtra, and several times IIT Bombay is listed at the top rank position in World University Rankings. It was Founded in the year 1958 and was declared an institute of national importance by the Indian government in the year 1961.

It offers admission to first-year undergraduate engineering programs in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Energy, Mechanical, Metallurgical Engineering, and MSc Chemistry. One of the main objectives of establishing the institute was to develop facilities for studies in a variety of specialized engineering and technological sciences. The need for establishing adequate facilities for postgraduate studies and research was the main objective in the founding years.

4. IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur is located in the Northern side of the country in Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur is also been recognized as the Institute of National Importance. It was built in the year 1959 by the Indian government from the contribution of nine different US-based research universities, the consortium of such big universities as MIT, UCB, Princeton University, and many others helped IIT Kanpur to develop better research Laboratories and academic structure.

P.K Kelkar was the first chief director of the university, the central library of the university is named after him. The Techkriti festival is celebrated by this university for promoting technology and science, it was first celebrated in the year 1995.

The campus of the university is spread over a vast area of 1000 acres of land in the western part of Kanpur city, this huge land for building this university was donated by the state government of Uttar Pradesh at that time. At present over 7000 students are learning here for their Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees.

5. IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee is among the Top ranked engineering colleges in Asia, it is also the oldest engineering institution in India. Initially, it was started as the college of civil engineering during British rule in the year 1847 on the orders of Lieutenant-Governor James Thomason as a place to train officers and surveyors who were involved in the construction Ganges Canal. But later after the death of James Thomason and the completion of the Ganges canal project, it was renamed Thomason College of Civil engineering by Proby Cautley.

Finally, after its independence in the year 1949, it was recognized as the University of Roorkee and later got renamed IIT Roorkee in 2001. At present, the Institute covers 22 different Academic Departments from which Its Engineering and Management department is highly recognized.

IIT Roorkee is located in Uttarakhand, India. The campus of university is spread over an area of 365 acres and it also has a separate campus of 25 acres for courses like Paper Technology and Packaging Technology, Polymer Science, and Process Engineering.

6. IIT BHU (Banaras Hindu University)

IIT BHU is a Public Technical University; it is located in the religious city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. First, it was started with the name Banaras Engineering College in the year 1919, but later in 1968 got renamed the Institute of Technology Banaras (IIT, Banaras).

At present, it offers 16 different Academic departments, with 3 interdisciplinary schools and 1 school for the Humanities and Social Science section.

The campus of this university comes under the area of Banaras Hindu University.

IIT, Banaras is credited for starting to provide degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and also for the courses such as Metallurgy and Pharmaceutics.

7. IIT Gandhinagar

Similar to other IITs Gandhinagar is also a Public Technical University, it is located in the capital city of Gujarat, and it was also declared an institute of national importance by the Indian government. It is among the newly started IITs established in the year 2008, the campus of the university is spread over a vast area of 400 acres near the Sabarmati river. It is one among eight other IITs, which were announced by the Human Resource and Development Ministry.

In the inaugural year of the institute, IIT Gandhinagar offered only courses for three academic departments which were Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

8. IIT Hyderabad

The campus of this university is built in the sangareddy city of Telangana. It is also recognized as the Institute of National importance. The establishment of the university was announced by Human Resource and Development Ministry in 2008. The campus of the university is spread over a huge area of 576 acres, the institute is highly popular for its architecture which was made under the supervision of American architect, Prof. Christopher Charles Benninger.

Currently, over 4000 students from different academic branches are pursuing here for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the total faculty count is around 255.

IIT Hyderabad offers BTech and MTech degrees in ten disciplines of Engineering, B.Des and M.Des degrees in design, and MSc degrees in science. In 2019, the institute started offering M. A. in Development Studies. The institute also offers Ph.D. across all disciplines of engineering, sciences, and liberal arts. At the institute, every semester, undergraduate students have the option to take courses in liberal arts and creative arts such as macroeconomics.

9. IIT Dhanbad

IIT Dhanbad is ranked number eight on this list, IIT Dhanbad is among the most prestigious public technical university in India. The campus of the university is located in Dhanbad city, and it is built in a vast area of 218 acres. Recently, the Jharkhand state government announced 226.8 acres of land for the construction of its second campus. IIT Dhanbad offers more than 18 different academic courses and is also recognized as an Institute of national importance.

It was built in 1926 at that time it was known named as the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad but later it was renamed as Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad 2016. The institute is the third oldest IIT in comparison to the other 28 IITs. The idea of starting the institute was proposed by the British Indian government and was inaugurated by Lord Irwin.

10. IIT Indore

IIT Indore is the newest among other IITs, it was started in the year 2009. The campus of this university is built in Simrol city near Khandwa road, this IIT Indore was running on a temporary campus. It was also announced as the Institute of National importance by the Indian government. The establishment of the university was announced by Human Resource and Development Ministry in 2008. The campus of the university is spread over a huge area of 501.42 acres, the institute is highly popular for its architecture.

Currently, over 1500 students from different academic branches are pursuing here for their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the total faculty count is around 255.

Talking about its engineering degrees IIT Indore offers a B.Tech program for four years in Mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and many other courses for students who are willing to make their career in Arts and Management.
