Background

Zubeen Garg is from the little city of Jorhat in upper Assam. Jibon Barthakur is his real name. He was given the name Zubin Mehta in honor of the renowned composer and went by the surname Gautra.

Mister Mohini gave birth to Zubeen. A well-known poet and lyricist by the name of M. Borthakur and the late Mrs. Ily Borthakur. He is frequently known as Zubin Garg, Jubin Garg, or simply Zubin, Zubeen, or Jubin, as well as different combinations of the names mentioned earlier due to transliteration errors.

The family of Borthakur originated in Janji, Sivasagar. Mr. Borthakur, a magistrate, and little Zubeen traveled a lot in their early years. The mother of Zubeen was a talented singer, actor, and dancer.

She did not, however, pursue a career in these skills. She decided to teach them to little Zubeen at home instead. Zubeen values his mother as his first guru and mentor. Jonkie Borthakur, a popular singer and actress who died in a vehicle accident in 2002, was Zubeen's younger sister.

The second sister of Zubeen, Palme, is a talented Bharatnatyam dancer who resides in Guwahati. Zubeen became active in several AIDS and brain cancer charities because he felt obliged to his devoted Assamese followers.

In his apartment, which is a part of his music studio named Sound Silence, located at 165/1, Sher-E-Punjab, Andheri East, Mumbai, India, Zubeen resides with his wife Garima, a fashion designer. In northeast India, Zubeen has started a network of beauty salons known as Zubeen's Veda.

Beginning Music Career

Zubeen first studied tabla with Guru Robin Banerjee before continuing with Guru Romoni Rai to study Assamese traditional music. After his family relocated permanently to Guwahati, he transferred from J.B. College in Jorhat to B. Barooah College, where he studied for a Bachelor of Science. However, he dropped out of his bachelor's program to enter the music profession.

His life radically changed when Zubeen won the gold medal for his solo western performance at the 1992 youth competition. He initially experienced success and confidence as a vocalist at this point. Zubeen is a skilled keyboard player and plays the dhol, dotara, mandolin, and percussion instruments.

In 1992, he made his music debut with the release of his debut album, Anamika. This odd record quickly gained popularity throughout northeast India and changed the face of Assamese music for the twenty-first century.

Zubeen didn't turn back after that. With nearly 40 albums, Zubeen continues his musical career by directing the music for around 24 Assamese films and a couple in Hindi and Bangla. For the Bangla movie Shudhu Tumi, he won the 2005 Best Music Award.

With nearly 9000 songs recorded in various languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Oriya, Bengali, Marathi, Nepali, and more, Zubeen considers himself a true musician. "Ya Ali," a song from the movie "Gangster," gained immense popularity in India, South Asia, and the Middle East. It was so well-received that a remix album titled "Ya Ali Remix Blast" was published by DJ Suketu Aks.

Tumi Mor Matho Mor, an Assamese movie that Zubeen wrote, directed, and starred in, was released in 2000. He contributed acting, co-production, and musical composition to the 2005 national award-winning Assamese film Dinabandhu. In 2006, the Hindi film Strings - Bound By Faith, directed by Sanjay Jha and included music by Zubeen, was released.

The most recent solo Assamese albums by Zubeen, released in 2007 under the N.K. production label, are Mukha and Uronia Mon. He is now working on his upcoming Hindi album, Chakra. In 2007, Zubeen released his Hindi album, "Zindagi," to positive reviews.

He also contributed to the 2008 publication of the "Rumal" video album, an Assamese audio album. In Kolkata, the Bengali version of the video album was made available.

Award

2007's National Award is the only prize Zubeen Garg has received.
