Summary

The film opens with a victim discovered in a pool of blood and lawyer Siddharth Jaisingh (a superbly controlled Arjun Rampal) hurrying to the hospital. We show news articles depicting the terrible deaths of migrant children during the opening titles. Soon later, we observe a specially authorized task team apprehending the murderer. Veer Singh (a brilliant Manav Kaul) is a do-gooder, ex-Armyman, and kids' sports instructor. There is a lot of non-linear narrative in the opening few minutes of the video, which is distracting, but everything is quickly reined in. The court scenes in Nail Polish are remarkably devoid of melodrama, thanks partly to Arjun's fantastic chemistry with Anand Tiwari's public prosecutor Amit Kumar. The economic discrepancy between Amit and the hotshot lawyer Sid, who embarks on this case only for political mileage, is one of the layers addressed in this judicial drama.

However, it is depressing that this political viewpoint is not sufficiently addressed. While there is a lot of back-and-forth between these attorneys, who are expertly balanced by Judge Kishore Bhushan (Rajit Kapur), the film abruptly veers into the terrain that explains the title. In the larger scheme of things, there is also a parallel tale between the judge and his wife, Shobha (Madhoo). However, this digression has a payout, and it is here that Bugs' writing shines. There's an excessive song here, and a predictable unwinding, but no plot arc is left unfinished. Even though the film has one too many layers, Bugs manages to bring it all together. The continuously strong results are what keep Nail Polish going to the finish. Manav Kaul takes on the duty of holding this courtroom drama together from the moment it enters the psychological thriller zone. Manav gives an outstanding performance as Veer Singh in a challenging tightrope act. A minor blunder may have reduced Veer Singh's part to a caricature.

However, Manav keeps the spectator guessing about the character's innocence. Is Veer Singh a pedophile who also murders his victims? Is he a pawn in a political game? Is he someone who keeps too many secrets? Is he suffering from severe childhood trauma? The fact that Manav doesn't drop the ball even once in a 120-minute film speaks everything about his acting abilities.

Meanwhile, Arjun, as a cocksure lawyer with daddy issues, sells both overconfidence and vulnerability when he is at a loss for words on many occasions. Also, there are more silences than furious language exchanges for a courtroom drama, and Sanjay Wandrekar's background soundtrack improves the experience. It's also worth noting how courtroom dramas in Bollywood are gradually elevating the role of judges. Rajit's Judge Bhushan had a heroic moment in this episode. Because the adrenaline aspects are exhausted too early in the film, Nail Polish needs to be a more fascinating psychological, legal thriller. We are eventually left to play the waiting game, despite knowing where the film is going. But, due to Manav, the wait is worthwhile.

A Provocative Exploration of Dark Themes

From one point of view, "Nail Polish" is lauded as a daring and thought-provoking exploration of dark themes. It fearlessly delves into the depths of human nature, challenging societal norms and provoking uncomfortable conversations. The film's unapologetic approach to exploring justice, identity, and moral ambiguity is a refreshing departure from the usual cinematic fare. Its ability to push boundaries and challenge conventional thinking is praised, as it forces viewers to question their biases and reassess their notions of truth and perception.

Nuanced Performances and Layered Characters

Another perspective appreciates the film's stellar cast and its ability to deliver nuanced performances. The lead actor, in particular, is hailed for his portrayal of Veer Singh, a complex character who blurs the lines between innocence and guilt. The supporting cast members also receive accolades for adding depth and authenticity to their roles. The interplay between the characters and the chemistry among the ensemble are seen as significant strengths, elevating the film's impact and providing a compelling viewing experience.

Controversial and Divisive Interpretations

Conversely, some viewers criticize "Nail Polish" for its controversial subject matter and narrative choices. They argue that the film treads uncomfortable territory without offering a clear moral stance, leaving audiences morally conflicted. The film's complex characters and ambiguous storyline are seen as a double-edged sword, as they can lead to confusion and frustration rather than enlightenment. From this perspective, "Nail Polish" is viewed as a film that prioritizes shock value over cohesive storytelling.
