Text messages can be communicated using the Morse code method by entering a series of electrical pulses, often shown as a short pulse (referred to as a "dot") and a long pulse (a "dash"). Samuel F. B. Morse created the code in the 1840s to be used with his telegraph innovation, the first device to successfully use electromagnetic for long-distance communication. The early telegrapher would press a key up and down to convey a series of characters that the receiving telegrapher could read from tape. This telegrapher was frequently at a railroad station connected to others over miles of telegraph pole lines (later operators learned to read the transmissions simply by listening). The old form used a dot (or, as it sounded to the telegrapher, a "dit") for the key down followed by the following letter, and a dash for the key down fast twice in succession (a "dah" or "dit-dit"). A dash, dot, or any other combination served as the text equivalent of each character.

In what became known as the International Morse Code or Continental Code in the late 1800s, certain letters were represented by dots and dashes in a slightly different way as new keying technology became commonplace. But even into the 1960s, the American Morse code was still in use in the United States. The origins of the Morse code are the subject of several legends. A printer's business is where Samuel Morse allegedly went to count the quantity of printer type the printer had for each letter of the alphabet. Following that, he explained these figures as rough estimates of each letter's relative frequency in ordinary English text. He set up the Morse code so that the shortest symbols corresponded to the letters that were used the most. Denton was pressured into declaring that his captors were treating him nicely behind enemy lines during an appearance on North Vietnamese television. His eyes, though, revealed a different tale. He blinked in a pattern that represented the word "torture" in Morse code. The code was mainly phased out in the latter part of the 20th century. Since 1995, the U.S. Coast Guard hasn't utilized it for official purposes, and contemporary ships rely far more heavily on satellite communications equipment. To learn the code, however, intelligence professionals are still being trained by Uncle Sam's Navy. The International Morse Code Preservation Society, a global alliance of amateur radio operators with thousands of members, is another organization that supports it. Therefore, even if the era of dots and dashes may be ended, Morse code is still in use. No emergency signal is necessary.

It is activated by tapping the necessary number of dots and dashes, followed by the appropriate amount of pause. Between words, there are larger pauses than within a word. What words or numbers are being sent using Morse code depends on the length of the gaps and the quantity of dots and dashes employed. The dots and dashes eventually came to be known as "dits" and "dahs" based on the sound of the radio pulses when Morse Code was translated for use on radio.
